Chapter Fifteen

Reaper

As we unpack his things, Sammy asks, “Have you ever considered downsizing?”

“I have,” I admit. “Does it bother you? I know it’s a large space, but I mostly use the first-floor rooms.”

“The size doesn’t bother me,” he says, casually tossing his shirts into a drawer. I smile, knowing I’ll have to fold and reorganize them later.

“Then what is it?” I push.

“I don’t want to hurt your feelings,” he hesitates.

I drop the jeans on the bed and walk over to where he’s standing by the dresser. “Look at me, baby,” I demand. He meets my gaze. “It takes a lot to hurt my feelings. Please, tell me what’s on your mind.”

With a sigh, Sammy sits on the bed. “It’s sterile,” he explains. “Your house is so clean. There isn’t a single thing out of place. It feels empty, almost like a show house rather than a home where real people live.”

“Ahh,” I nod, understanding. “I see what you mean.”

“You mentioned that this was your childhood home. Where are all the memories?”

“Packed away and in storage,” I tell him. “When my parents died, I had every intention of selling the place. I had everything packed away apart from the furniture.”

“Have you changed your mind?” he asks as I pull out the shirts that he had carelessly tossed into the drawer, neatly folding them in the process. Sammy rolls his eyes, and I can’t help but smile at his predictable reaction.

“Your OCD and I are not going to get along well,” he remarks.

I look back and wink. “Everything about you will get along perfectly with me,” I say. “To answer your question, no, I haven’t changed my mind about selling the house. I’ve already had everything that needed repairing taken care of, and I’ve bought a wonderful three-bedroom home.”

“Then what’s the problem?” Sammy asks.

I hesitate for a moment, searching for the right words. “I guess it just hasn’t felt like the right time to move into the new house,” I say, looking back at Sammy, who was still sitting on the bed. Visions of him and our children running through the spacious rooms of our new home flash through my mind. “But maybe the right time has finally arrived.”

Sammy rolls his eyes. “Do your buddies know how much of a sap you are?” he teases. “I mean, you could probably write romantic poetry.”

I chuckle, shaking my head. “I’ll have you know that I have many hidden talents,” I say, grinning at him. “But you’re the only one who gets to see them.”

My mind flashes to images of his naked and sweaty form submitting beneath me, but I quickly pull those thoughts back. I meant it when I told him that physical intimacy wasn’t a necessity in our relationship. I fell in love with his personality, not just his body.

I can see the flicker of fear in his eyes, quickly masked by a neutral expression. “It’s okay, baby,” I say, smiling reassuringly. “I truly hope you believe that.”

“I do,” he sighs. “And I know we’ve already talked about this, but I guess it will always bother me.
